Bryant gets bronze at Golden Gloves, Rose takes kickboxing bout, more
Some very quick Utah Fight Game notes:
We neglected to mention that Top of Utah amateur boxer Jon Bryant (seen above at left) earned a medal in the recent national Golden Gloves tourney, 132 pounds. Jon will later this year attempt to earn a spot in the U.S. Olympics team qualifying competition.
Both Ignacio and Gabriel Chairez, Northern Utah professional boxers, are slated to fight against separate opponents on June 8 in Salt Lake City. Two other area competitors, professional boxers Larry Gomez and Christian Aguirre, headline a June 15 card in Wendover.
Utah MMA professional Clay Collard had his second professional boxing bout last weekend in Dearborn, Mich. Collard, a former UFC fighter, is now 1-0-1 after holding undefeated Tipton Walker, 6-0-1, to a six-round draw. Given that Walker is from Michigan, achieving a draw speaks well for Collard's effort.
On May 31 and June 1 at The Utah Stair Fairpark, Junior Olympics amateur boxing champs from Utah and three other Rocky Mountain States will be competing for a chance to go to the national tournament in Wisconsin.
Last weekend in Farmington, Cole Rose wrested a regional 170-pound Mountain Force Kickboxing pro title via a five round decision over former titlist Jarrett Kelton. Results of the entire card were posted May 19 on the promotion's Facebook page here.
And, in SLC on May 31, SteelFist has another professional/amateur MMA card. Tracy Hardy and Mike Jones headline the card in a professional bout. Other professionals competing include Thomas Hughes and Trevor Bradshaw. Entire card is here.
And last Thursday, Northern Utah MMA professional Steven Siler was defeated in his first bout in the 2019 PFL Featherweight MMA tournament. Siler, a finalist last year, dropped a decision to Gadzhi Rabadanov. Siler can still move further into this year's tournament with a win in his next bout this summer.

Kelton meets Rose in kickboxing title tiff
Tomorrow night, May 18, Mountain Force Kickboxing will be at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington. Main bout has promotional champ Jarrett Kelton defending his 170 pound belt against Cole Rose. It's an intriguing match. More information on card is at the promotion's Facebook page. ... In other kickboxing news, Kaecy Raddon, who is a Mountain Force champ, announced that he has been selected as a member of WAKO Team USA Kickboxing and will represent our nation at the World Championships in October at Saravejo, Bosna Herzegovina.
Last Friday night LFA 66 MMA card was at West Valley. Jon Neal met former UFC TUF fighter Tyler Diamond in the main bout. It was very competitive with Diamond earning a hard-fought decision. Neal started strong early but was stunned midway through round one and had to focus on defense to recover. Round two was more even with Diamond's ground game giving him an edge. Utah Fight Game scored round three for Neal, who rallied the final third of the round as Diamond seemed to be tiring. The decision for Diamond was unanimous. In the c-main Josh Burkman announced his retirement after losing a split decision to William Macario. Other bouts included Joe Rodriguez dropping a hard-fought decision to undefeated Trevino, and LJ Schulz being decisioned by undefeated Hunter Azure. The entire card results are here.
On that same night in Las Vegas, Top of Utah Fighters Hayden Brown and Tyson Craig earned TuffNUff amateur titles, Hayden at 185 pounds and Tyson at 155 pounds. The card results are here.
IN BOXING NEWS ... Utah professionals Larry Gomez and Christian Aguirre, who fought a memorable fight last year, won by Gomez via decision, have signed for a rematch June 15 in Wendover. And this weekend there is Junior Olympics state tournament amateur boxing at Foley's gym in Ogden. Bouts start at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Raddon wins kickboxing title; Hughes among MMA fights this weekend
On Feb. 23 in Farmington at Mountain Force Kickboxing 2, Kaecy Raddon, 6-4, stopped Ian Scott, 5-3, in round one to win the promotion's lightweight title belt. Raddon, who has competed internationally, had too much experience for the game Scott, who has dropped seconds after the opening bell and then pummeled until the bout was stopped. You can see the bout at Raddon's Facebook page.
At the card it was announced that the promotion's pro welterweight champion, Jarrett Kelton, will defend his title on May 18 against Cole Rose. (See poster above)
This Saturday in Salt Lake City Fierce Fighting Championship 10 will have an MMA card at the Utah State Fair Park. The main event matches Bobby King and Nate Kearsley for the promotion's 155-pound belt. The co-main matches Ogden MMA pro Thomas Hughes against Randy Rowland. Local fighters competing on the card include Brandon Rease, Jeffery Prado-Morales and Kelsey Skillman. More info on FCC is here.
In boxing news, as we reported previously, undefeated pro Larry Gomez headlines a card in SLC on March 8 and Christian Aguirre fights Thomas Hill in Texas on March 16 on the undercard of Erroll Spence Jr. versus Mikey Garcia world welterweight championship bout..

Interview with jiu-jitsu pro John Valentine, fight update
Before we
start our interview with jiu-jitsu professional John Valentine I(above), competing in
Farmington on May 5 in the Proving Grounds Invitational, here’s a little fight
news in Utah:
Last weekend
in Denver Colorado at Sparta Combat League 68, some fighters with local ties
competed. Kaecy Raddon, a highly ranked amateur at 155, lost a close decision
to another top amateur, Johnson Nasona. In a kickboxing match, Jarrett Kelton
lost a close nod to Brandon Taylor, and 185-pounder Hayden Brown was stopped by
Anthony Cordova. A stablemate of the trio, Alie Kane, lost to Mdegan Winick in
a 115-pound MMA bout. All are amateurs. Your reporter had Kelton, Raddon, and
Kane winning narrow decisions on his card. (All results are here.)
Saturday, in
Casper, Wyo, Rowdy Akers, MMA pro out of One Hit MMA, meets Houssam El Kasri in
a bout (card is here.) And the same night in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in pro MMA bouts, Kerry
Lattimer meets Gabe Pelayo, and Fabio Serrao fights Andrew Cruz (card is here). The three bouts
are all at 145 pounds.
Finally,
Imperial Boxing has made it official: a pro boxing card May 26 at the Davis
Conference. Main bout is 160 pounds pro state title Larry Gomez versus
Christian Aguirre, both undefeated.
Now, our
interview with John Valentine, who meets Chris Wells in an intriguing co-main
bout at PGI: John, now out of Las Vegas, has a long tenure locally with MMA, including coaching a women's MMA team at Hidden Valley Gym, matchmaking with SteelFist, and managing MMA women fighters.
Tell us
about the fight in May?
Valentine: The
fight in May is going to be an exciting one. It is with the invitation-only and
submission-only tournament Proving Grounds invitational (PGI), hosted by Dave
Casteo and Carl Sims. I am one of the featured super fights and the co-main
event for the tournament. I will be taking on one of the most decorated black
belts in Utah, Chris Wells, who is a third-degree black belt under Pedro Sauer.
In addition to my fight there will be three, eight-man brackets where people
are fighting for prize money. In my fight specifically it is a winner take all.
For me this will definitely be one of my toughest challenges that I have faced;
but also one of the most exciting for me as I get an opportunity to once again
give back to some special causes.
How is
training going?
Valentine: My
training, diet, spiritual, mental and physical preparation are all on point. I
built a team for this fight compiled of some of the most talented and decorated
world champions in the sport. Training under arguably one of the top five
practitioners in the world, Team Robert Drysdale, I was able to pull and
partner with a great group of coaches, including, world champions Antonio Lopez,
Bendy Casimir and my long-time friend and former MMA coach, Utah Black Belt
Brandon Guzzo.
Tell us
about the charitable effort to raise money?
Valentine: The
response to the charity and causes has been phenomenal. It’s been overwhelming,
we’re reaching out to people who don’t even live nearby. The causes all center
around suicide awareness. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary
problem and something that has plagued many folks in our own life, but it’s
taken the lives of many folks in the Utah area as well recently. My main focus
charity wise is “Kimonos for Kai,” which was created by James Wright, a close
friend of mine in the memory of his son who passed Kai Wright. The message of
the organization encourages parents and others to talk to your children about
their feelings. Too often children take their own lives because they feel they
have no one to talk to or turn to. The organization gives talks and provides
support and tools to encourage dialogue between parents, coaches and our youth.
James’s message really centers around the idea that you were not replaceable
and that you can always talk to someone if you cannot talk to a parent and find
a friend. If you can’t talk to a friend, find a coach. But the point is always
be sure to talk to someone; there’s always someone here to help you. The second
way I have shown support through my previous MMA fights and this event is to
get sponsorships. This allows people who want to support others to attend these
events who otherwise would not have the financial means to do so. I have
already purchased blocks of tickets that will be distributed through the tournament
organizers for Proving Grounds Invitational and they are working to distribute
those to those in need. It’s important for folks to get out and see these
events as they start to chart and plan their own future goals in jiu-jitsu or
whatever sport they choose. Anyone interested in supporting can contact me
directly. I’m excited at the opportunity to not only compete but compete with
purpose in a class
Also, what
are some long-term goals in your fight career?
Valentine: As
I made the transition in November from the cage as an MMA fighter I still stay
centered and focused on the concepts as a transition into jiu-jitsu. Meaning, I
still love to compete and still able to do so at an age when many people were
throwing in the towel. I want to believe that with training and focus I could
be doing this for years to come. Coming off the world championships last year,
a lot has changed. I was promoted to black belt after 17 years of training,
which was one of the most exciting, and humbling experiences of my life. I feel
like my journey now has just started. My main goal this year is to win a second
world title, but in the black belt division. The medals and the titles don’t
matter as much as my primary goal, which is just to be the best practitioner I
can be. The medals in tournaments are just one way to measure that. So is learning,
growing and developing as not just a practitioner, but becoming a better
teammate. And representing the sport and my gym is also key. I plan to stay active
this year and I have some exciting news that I’ll be announcing shortly about a
submission-only super fight in the cage in Las Vegas where I will be the
featured co-main event. All the proceeds will go back to our troops. Stay
tuned!
Is there
anyone else you'd like to thank John as you work up to your superfight?
Valentine: Yes,
in addition to all the fans and supporters and my gym, I'd like to thank my
sponsors, who have done such an amazing job of financing this journey and the
charitable causes: Buckedup pre-workout, Breakpoint fight company, RK Fleming Photography
and finally Carl Sims and David Casteo of Proving Grounds Invitational for
putting on such an amazing event, giving back to the community and for giving
me the honor to compete.
In a further
conversation with me, Valentine, 47, said the bout with Wells is scheduled for
nine minutes. There will be overtime competition, if needed, in which “they
start you over, and you both take turns in one position,” he said. The
competitor who does better in the OT will be the winner. The fight is at 155
pounds. “I started my weight cut a week ago,” John said. His only prediction?
“I’m going to grow. That’s all I care about – to become a better martial
artist.”
He also
talks with pride about his sons, all active in sports, three of whom are active
in jiu-jitsu. Citing their ability to motivate him, he said, “they are probably
my best training partners.”

SteelFist results, Raddon, Kelton fight this weekend
Although the poster says April 7 in Everett, Wash., an amateur title bout between Nasona Johnson and former Utahn Kaecy Rraddon for the Sparta Combat League 155-pound title is actually this Saturday in Denver. Several fighters with Utah ties are on the card (MMA bouts here). Besides Raddon and Nasona, Hayden Brown, an amateur who fights out of One Hit MMA, battles Joshua Cordova, and Allie kane fights Megan Winick.
Also competing in a kickboxing bout against Brandon Taylor is Top of Utahn Jarrett Kelton. Besides having compiled a career in MMA, Kelton is a highly regarded kickboxer, as is Raddon, who compete in WAKO-sanctioned bouts. I chatted with Jarrett recently about his career and the upcoming Sparta card.
KELTON: "I'm just training at ONEHITMMA, teaching Bangmuaythai two days a week. I have a pretty busy (schedule), working full time (at) Juvenile Justice at Mill Creek Youth Center, teaching, training and raising my 17-year-old son, Rhett Kelton . We travel out to LUDWIG Martial Arts (in Colorado) every other month to dial in skill sets With Duane Ludwig, Bangmuaythai drills. I am the Bangmuaythai affiliate coach for Utah. Aldo Oreggia Owner/Head Coach At ONEHITMMA, has been great to work with over past years . He is great coach and friend. Myself, Allie Kane , Hayden Brown and KC Raddon will be fighting This Saturday in Denver for Spartan Combat League."
The Sparta card starts at 1 p.m. and should be livestreamed at their site. The Facebook page is here.
STEELFIST: Results from last week's SteelFist card is at Fighting Out of Utah MMA News Facebook page. In the main pro bout, former UFCer Clay Collard handed Carson Gregory his first loss via a second-round stoppage. That was for the 170-pound belt. In another pro bout, 145 pounds, Bryce Edminister stopped Karl Grace in round one. Winning in amateur title belts were Lehi Dominguez and Bryce Scanlon.
-- A couple of pro boxing notes: Bladimir Estrada plans to return to the ring in June and Francisco "Cisco" Alcantara, who is also a pro MMA fighter, plans to box on May 26 in SLC.

Interview with MMA pro Cisco Alcantara
As part of a preview for the October SteelFist MMA card we've chatted with Top of Utah mixed martial artist Francisco "Cisco" Alcantara, who returns to the cage after a while off to meet undefeated Carson Gregory. Alcantara recently trained a few days at Duane Ludwig's gym in Broomfield, Colo., working out with the Bang Muy Thai training system. (Above, from left, UFC fighter T.J. Dillashaw, unidentified fighter, Alcantara and Ludwig.)
Here's our interview.
Tell
me about visiting Colorado, Bang Mui Thai, Duane Ludwig's philosophy on
training. How does it help you personally as a mixed martial artist? Who went
with you?
Alcantara: Visiting Colorado for 4 days was great. We did two trainings/classes a day at Bang Muay Thai with Duane Ludwick himself showing us the proper way of putting the punches and kicks together. Also we had the opportunity to train alongside TJ Dillashaw watching how an ex-UFC champion trains and puts his combinations together was great and inspiring. We also went to Easton gym to spar with current and up and coming UFC fighters. Let's just say they only have one speed and that's fast and hard. Jon Neal, Gavin Weston, Hayden Brown and Jarrett Kelton all went with me but Jarrett Kelton set it all up for us. He's been helping since day one. (Below, Alcantara, front in last row, lined up for training.)
What
is training like for the Gregory fight? You've had a break from the cage. Are
you back into the routine well?
Alcantara: Training for Gregory is training to go to war, just like any other war that I've been in. This time I've worked hard to get to a lighter weight: class, 170 pounds. I've never fought at 170 so I will be faster, stronger and healthier than I've ever been in this fight. My mind is clear and I'm still chasing this dream I want to fight in the UFC one day and I honestly think that I can beat any 170-pound man that walks this earth with proper training and God's grace.
Who is helping you locally train? How is your mindset after a few years away. Are family and friends a support.
Alcantara: I'm back in routine training with Dave Foley Jarrett Kelton and Aldo Oreggia from One Hit (and) West Side. And (I'm training with) Jason Tafoya on striking and mitt work. I'm too old to go in the cage and risk injury or even my life just for nothing. The pay is minimal, I've actually lost money for taking time off of work and paying for blood work and test but to me this is an investment and me stopping Gregory will put me at the top of the division and hopefully move me closer to the Big Show. (Photo below shows Alcantara on the way to making the 170-pound weight.)
Alcantara: My children have been in my corner since day one. They root for daddy win or lose I've had a bad losing streak but it's time to
change that and show my friends, family and even my enemies that you can't keep
a good man down, that hard work and dedication pays off. I'm will to do anything
and everything to win and walk up the ranks to get to the top ... Cisco kid.
My family is traveling from California to watch this
fight so I have a lot of pressure to win but I look at it like this, regardless. I'm coming to win. I just need to make it pretty for them. I'm dedicating
this fight to The Lord and Savior that has kept me alive and well through the hard
times that life brings.
Back to us: Good luck Cisco on fight night. We extend that same wish to all the competitors. And thanks again Cisco, for speaking with us. I still recall your win over Mike Crisman a while back as one of the best fights I have seen.
Results to the last weekend's Fierce Fighting Championship card in Tooele are at Fighting Out of Net Facebook page (here). Results included Antonio Arroyo stopping Trever Carlson in round one, David Putvin stopping Cy Nelson, and Nate Kearsley winning a majority decision over Tanner Cowan. In amateur title bouts, Aaron Thomson stopped Ali Farkhar and Zac Cavender stopped Justin Oswald.
ONE MORE THING: Professional Trever Bradshaw announced on social media that he's fighting on a SteelFist card on Dec. 9.
BOXING:
Two amateur cards. Saturday night, Oct. 7, at Foley's gym in Ogden, a host of amateur fights start at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6. Info in the poster below.

Interview with MMA professional Thomas Hughes
Thomas Hughes (at left with teammate Jarrett Kelton) is making his professional MMA debut Friday, Sept. 12 in Ogden as part of the Jeremy Horn's Elite Fight Night card during the Weber County Fair. Although Hughes has a 3-0 amateur MMA record, he's better known as a kick, who, along with Kelton, is a member of the U.S. kickboxing team. He's a national champ and has fought internationally.
I had the opportunity to chat with Thomas:
1) What was the motivator to turn pro? And while it's an MMA
fight is your primary goal to compete in kickboxing?
Hughes: I've
been trying to get a fight since January with SteelFist and they've not been
able so get me an opponent and when Jen (of Horn's Elite) called me -- she had two people pull out
from fighting me as well -- ... I knew I had to turn pro or else I wouldn't get a
fight!
2) What do you know about your opponent, Marcel McCain (6-0 amateur). Is there any specific training for him?
Hughes: All
I know is he holds a few belts and is undefeated! That doesn't intimidate me at
all. My game plan and training is pretty simple; work hard and go for the
finish!
3) Where are you training and with whom? I assume Jarrett
and others are helping? What's the daily routine?
Hughes: I've
been working at One Hit MMA for striking, Blackout (gym) with Lucus Montoya and a lot of
phenomenal grapplers, and also down at Mori Training Center (in Ogden) with guys like Ryder
Campo.
4) After this bout, what's on tap long-term?
Hughes: I'm making my run to the UFC. Within 2018 I'll have a
contract in the UFC. I'm actually looking to transition and move down to Vegas
in the coming weeks with my family after the fight!
5) So you
are moving toward UFC rather than Glory or Bellator Kickboxing? Where will you train in
Las Vegas?
Hughes: I've got a few connection at Xtreme Couture and syndicate so
I'm going to pray about it to know for sure! Yes I'm going full toward UFC and
leaving the kickboxing behind.
Hughes certainly has the talent to move up in MMA and he swish him well in his pro debut and future.
NEXT WEEK we will be interviewing some fighters from The Pack at Foley's gym in Ogden who will be competing in amateur bouts at the Horn's Elite card, including veteran Eric Munoz.
ALSO, just a reminder that The Garage's amateur Bryce Edminister is fighting in Boise, Idaho, at the Front Street Fights MMA card at the Century Link Arena. His opponent will be Kellen VanCamp. We'll try to chat with Bryce in a couple of weeks.
SOME AMATEUR BOXING: Last weekend there was a Legends amateur boxing card in SLC. Some All Heart gym fighters competed. Kam Santiago of All Heart defeated Jose Hernandez of Louie's gym. Edgar Taracena of All Heart was defeated, do not have his opponent's name.
